Mariposa County is known worldwide for the beauty of Yosemite National Park and the Sierra
Nevada Mountains, which form the backbone of the county. If one were to describe the
environment of Mariposa County it would include the beautiful shades of gray dressing the walls
of Yosemite, the color of the spring and fall, and the quiet blanket of snow that covers much of the
county during the winter. Recreational use of the entire county describes the activities commonly
enjoyed: Horseback riding on the ranches of the foothills, to the
hiking, river rafting, skiing, and bird watching; fishing; and general
enjoyment of one of the most unspoiled parts of California, for just a
